2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pickens County completed the 2015 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region four, the Tornados earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Pickens County reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Elba by a score of 64-14. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Pickens County has gone a combined 59-18. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 1A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pickens County has managed to compile a record of 183-114. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 1A and 73rd in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004. The Tornados are led by head coach James Thompson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 8-4 record in his first season at Pickens County. The Tornados saw improvement from a 7-4 record the season before coach Thompson arrived. Under his direction the Tornados have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Thompson. Coach Thompson's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 8-4 (66.7%). The Pickens County Tornados will play in Class 1A region five during the 2016 season. The Tornados may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region five this year. The Tornados have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 58-54 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 1A and 154th in the AHSAA. The Tornados should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Tornados have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2004 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Tornados open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Thorsby on Friday, August 26 at Susan Bentley Field. Last year the Thorsby Rebels finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 2A region four. The Rebels lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Providence Christian by a score of 17-6. Pickens County and Thorsby have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Tornados have a 7-0-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2015 with Pickens County winning by a score of 14-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
